Off-Grid Battery Solution for Remote Hiking Huts

The Challenge

The Overland Track is one of Australia’s most iconic wilderness treks, spanning rugged terrain and harsh weather conditions. Powering the remote huts along the trail presents a serious logistical challenge. Tasmania Parks & Wildlife Service needed a reliable, low-maintenance energy solution that could withstand extreme environments and reduce the need for helicopter servicing.

The Solution

Island Renewables, led by Paul Coull, designed and installed a number of off-grid solar and battery systems tailored to the remote and rugged locations.

- Mix of DC coupled solar and AC coupled solar for site-based grid

- Ultra-long lifespan and low-maintenance performance

- Rapid charging and operation in extreme heat and sub-zero temperatures

- Bushfire-safe chemistry with no risk of thermal runaway

Solution Delivered

- Fast-charging batteries to maximise solar production

- Impervious to extreme heat or cold

- Super safe in high-risk bushfire environment

- Enables emergency GRN radio communications

The Result

Arvio Titan batteries now power several huts along the Overland Track, providing dependable energy for lighting and essential equipment—even in Tasmania’s harshest winter conditions. The solution dramatically reduces the need for costly helicopter maintenance trips, while delivering year-round reliability in one of Australia’s most remote and weather-exposed national parks.
