Off-Grid Renewable Energy System

The Challenge

The Great Stupa, the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere, is evolving into a major cultural and spiritual destination. Powering such a remote site came with serious challenges. Grid power was unreliable, and upgrading to three-phase service came with a $500,000+ price tag, not to mention ongoing network charges. Diesel generators were considered, but environmental concerns prompted the search for a cleaner, long-term solution. “We started with generators, explored biomass, but it became clear solar and battery storage was the cleanest and most sustainable way forward.” - Wayne Thomson, Director and Consulting Engineer – Building Services at The Great Stupa of Universal Compassion.

The Solution

Arvio Australia delivered a fully integrated, scalable, off-grid solar and battery system using its long life Titan batteries, designed for extreme durability and over 30 years long-term performance, as well as EV chargers at site. Central to the system is the EJOS battery and site management software, offering real-time, cell-level monitoring and remote programming of the entire energy infrastructure.

Solution Delivered

• 98%+ efficiency, near-100% depth of discharge, and 35,000+ cycle life

• Remote monitoring and programming of PV, inverters, water, and site utilities via EJOS

• Silent, safe, zero-emissions operation scalable to build with the site’s increasing energy demands

• Seamless EV charging

The Result

The Great Stupa now enjoys dependable, off-grid power with no noise, no emissions, and no compromise for their increasing power requirements; perfectly aligned with their environmental values and long-term vision. With Arvio, the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion has achieved true energy independence for decades to come.
